luminaries_frontEleanor Catton is the youngest author yet to become the recipient of one of the world’s most prestigious literary awards the Man Booker prize, with her second novel The Luminaries. Set in the wild west coast of the South Island of New Zealand during the gold mining days of 1866, The Luminaries delivers 832 pages of extraordinary storytelling.

Her first novel The Rehearsal was released in New Zealand in 2008 and the UK in 2009, and has since been translated into numerous languages. Eleanor was winner of the 2007 Sunday Star-Times short story competition, the 2008 Glenn Schaeffer Fellowship, and best first book of fiction in the Montana New Zealand Book Awards 2009. The Rehearsal won the UK Society of Authors' Betty Trask Award, and it was long-listed for the Guardian First Book Award and the 2010 Orange Prize for Fiction. 

In November 2013 Eleanor Catton was awarded the Canadian Governor General's Literary Award for fiction for The Luminaries, and in December was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit. In January 2014 it was announced that she would be awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Literature in May at Victoria University of Wellington, where she has studied.
