Lifting off by helicopter from the grounds of Huka Lodge you will enjoy panoramic views over the northern shores of Lake Taupo, towards the majestic volcanic mountains of the World Heritage Tongariro National Park, and identify the southern most point of the famous ‘Pathway of Fire’.

Flying northward via the mighty Huka Falls your route will follow the geothermal valley of Wai-O-Tapu; New Zealand’s most colourful volcanic area – renowned for its Artist’s Pallete and Champagne Pools, as well as the Waimangu Thermal Valley.

We will then fly you over the sacred Mt. Tarawera summit, revealing the full magnitude of the spectacular 1886 eruption. En route you will also view the picturesque Tarawera Falls before landing in Whakatane.

Here, you will meet and be briefed by the team from Frontier Helicopters, the White Island tour specialists. They will provide you with safety equipment prior to flying you on the next leg of your guided tour of the living, breathing geological giant –Whakaari (White Island).

Your return journey from Whakatane to Huka Lodge takes you via the colourful Blue Lake, and also takes in the wonders of the Orakei Korako and Te Kopia thermal regions.

Ultimate Huka Experience Flight

This 1 hour 20 minute flight takes you south of Taupo into the magnificent Kaimanawa Range wilderness, with the possible sighting of wild horses, red and sika deer. Land next to the world-famous Rangitikei River to view the huge trophy-size Rainbow Trout. Return to the lake edge via the three volcanoes of the Tongariro World Heritage Park – Mts. Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro. These are significant for their cultural history and rare flora and fauna, with views of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and stunning Emerald Lakes.

Geothermal Wonderland

Travel north via the famous Huka Falls, following the Waikato River along the volcanic fault line to Wai-O-Tapu and Waimangu – the world’s newest geothermal eco-system.

Fly over and around dormant volcano Mt. Tarawera, which last erupted spectacularly in 1886. Return to the edge of Lake Taupo via lush farmland and forestry. Flight time 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Hawke’s Bay wine trail by helicopter

Travel over some spectacular scenery to and from Hawke’s Bay and take the opportunity to taste this region’s famous wines.

Visit Esk Valley one of Hawke’s Bay’s finest boutique producers and Mission Estate Winery, established in 1851, making it the oldest winery in New Zealand. Enjoy lunch at Te Awa Farm before heading to Selini Estate, whose gourmet food store specialises in top quality products and specialty gift items. Your last stop will be Trinity Hill Estate before returning to Taupo.

Heritage trail

A 30-minute scenic flight starting from the Huka Lodge grounds and heading downstream to the famous Huka Falls and Wairakei Geothermal Power Station area. At the time, only the second geothermal power plant in the world to begin commercial operation.

Proceeding to Mt. Tauhara – a dormant strato-volcano formed about 65,000 years ago, then the Maori rock carvings and the northern shores of Lake Taupo.

View the Wairakei Terraces from the air, with cascading silica terraces in blues, pinks and whites, fed by the steaming multi-hued waters of the Alum Lakes.

Waitomo Caves

This 45-minute flight from Huka Lodge takes you around the northern shores of Lake Taupo to the Waitomo Caves and returns via the Waikato River hydro-electric dam system, Wairakei Geothermal Bore Field and Huka Falls.

World in a Day; Nature's pathway of fire meets wine culture 

Fly north via the famous Huka Falls, following the Waikato River to the Wai-O-Tapu & Waimangu geothermal regions, fly over and around the rim of the dormant and spectacular volcano Mt. Tarawera, site of the largest eruption in recent history. Travel on to Whakatane where you will land and be briefed by the team from Frontier Helicopters, the White Island tour specialists. They will provide you with safety equipment prior to flying you on the next leg of your guided tour of the living, breathing geological giant –Whakaari (White Island).

On your return from White Island travel to the famous Hawke’s Bay region, land at two wineries, take the opportunity to taste superior New Zealand wines and learn a little about the history of the local viticulture industry. Lunch can be booked at either one of these famous vineyard restaurants or we can take a picnic and land on a remote beach.

Fly west via the beautiful Kaimanawa Forest Park & Mohaka River, search for the famous Kaimanawa wild horses and you may even spot wild deer. Land next to the world famous Rangitikei River and enjoy the wilderness. Return to the Lodge via the volcanic activity areas and craters of the spectacular World Heritage Tongariro National Park and the pristine waters of the great Lake Taupo.

Travel on to our Multi Day Adventure's base, in the heart of the geothermal wonderland, where you will be greeted by your guide and transferred by road the last few kilometres before embarking on your mountain biking mission. Hobbiton Movie Set Tour

Fly north by helicopter over Huka Falls beyond to the plains of the Central Plateau, arriving at ‘Hobbiton’. Take a tour of the movie set used for Sir Peter Jackson’s well known movies based on the novels by J.R.R. Tolkien. Central North Island – Stars of nature and the Silver Screen

Departing Huka Lodge we fly south over the pristine Great Lake Taupo and its White Cliffs. Climb to view the summit craters of Mt. Tongariro, Mt. Ngauruhoe and Mt. Ruapehu, enjoy spectacular views of the Tongariro Crossing, Emerald Lakes and thermal activity of the newly formed Te Maari Crater. These volcanoes are the stars of the World Heritage Tongariro National Park and home to many film locations from The Lord of the Rings trilogy including; Mt. Doom and Mordor. Land at high altitude in the Kaimanawa Forest Park where, look back from this vantage point on a clear day – you will be mesmerised by the panoramic views of the Great Lake Taupo and the Central Plateau.

Continue west over the Waikato Plains to our first landing place and tour destination – Hobbiton! Explore this location used for the Peter Jackson movies, The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit. View Hobbit holes, Green Dragon Inn, Mill and other structures created for these films. Learn how this beautiful part of a 1,250 acre sheep farm was transformed into an extraordinary movie set. This private tour takes 2 hours.

Volcanic wonderland & exclusive multi adventure day out

Includes 2-3 hours of superb mountain biking, extreme Kaituna Waterfall Rafting, a delicious lunch in a local café and a beautiful kayak on Lake Rotoiti, to thermal pools only accessible by boat. Suitable 13 years and older.

Fly north from the Lodge by helicopter, via the famous Huka Falls, following the Waikato River to the Wai-O-Tapu & Waimangu geothermal regions, fly over and around the rim of the dormant volcano Mt. Tarawera, site of a powerful eruption in 1886. 

Travel on to our Multi Day Adventure's base where you will be met by your guide and driven a few kilometres to Whakarewarewa Forest, one of New Zealand’s premiere mountain biking destinations. 

Select bikes and ride on easier trails to begin with, while your guides assess the perfect tracks for your skill and fitness levels for the remainder of the ride. 

Following mountain biking you can enjoy refreshments before making our way to Okere Falls and your base for the rest of the day. Changing to rafting fleece, wet suits and booties, don our safety equipment and undergo a thorough safety briefing before experiencing one of the most exciting area activities – Waterfall Rafting on the Kaituna River. Only 45 minutes in duration, raft through stunning river gorges laden with Maori lore and exciting Grade 5+ rapids including three waterfalls from 1m, 3m and 7m high – the last being the tallest commercially rafted waterfall in the world! Enjoy a fun surf at the end before returning to base for showers and lunch at a characterful local eco-store.

Continuing to the last leg, don warm fleece and life jackets before unloading kayaks at nearby Lake Rotoiti, paddling approximately 30minutes across scenic waters to a natural thermal hot pool operated by local Maori people. Soak at leisure before returning the 15-20 minutes to Te Puia heli-base. 

Return, by helicopter to the Lodge via some of the spectacular farm and forestland of the central North Island.

A fun day to view Maori culture and unique thermal activity. For lunch, enjoy fine food and a scenic setting at a beautiful lake near Rotorua. Rotorua is situated one-hour by car, from Taupo.

Napier/Hastings Tour

Take a trip to the ‘Napa Valley’ of New Zealand on the east coast of the North Island. A full-day is needed to visit this rich and fertile land where you can taste some of their award-winning wines, lunch at a vineyard or visit the city of Napier, which has become the Art Deco capital of the world, due to the redevelopment in 1931 following an earthquake.

You can walk or travel by vehicle to see the gannets at Cape Kidnappers or visit artists and antique shops.

Farm experience

Join Karen and Wally Niederer at Harakeke, a 10-minute drive from the Lodge. Harakeke is a 2300-acre working dairy farm and provides an excellent taste of rural New Zealand. It is encompassed by lush native trees and bush, inhabited by a variety of birds, deer and wild turkey. Blessed with panoramic views of the volcanoes and lake, this 3-hour farm experience, with guide, is not to be missed.

Prices include transfers to and from the farm and begin from the time when your guide arrives and end upon your return to Huka Lodge.

You can time your visit to coincide with when the cows are being milked, at 9.00am and again at 2.00pm.
