Scenic Lake Taupo cruise and boat fishing

At 616-square kilometres, it is the land mass equivalent of Singapore. The lake’s attractive pumice sand beaches give it the appearance of an inland ocean and it offers excellent all year round scenic lake cruises and fishing experiences. Most fishing on the lake takes the form of trolling using either lures or flies, with the catch averaging around four pounds.

Your 4-hour cruise will take you to the Maori rock carvings and on a clear day the majestic volcanoes of Mts. Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro can be seen at the Southern end of the lake.

Your 8-hour cruise will give you the whole day in which to explore the crystal clear waters of Lake Taupo and experience all that it has to offer, especially the beauty and isolation of the Western Bays.

If you would like to enjoy the thrill of water-skiing, wake boarding and use of the ski biscuit or kayaking, this can be arranged at an additional cost. Please enquire at Reception (available in the summer months only).

Charges begin from when your guide arrives and end upon your return to Huka Lodge. Should the Waianiwa be unavailable an alternative vessel may be used.

Fly fishing

Whether you are an experienced fly fisherman or a complete novice you will find fly fishing both a delight and a challenge. The world-renowned Tongariro River is classed as one of the best fly fishing rivers in the world and is also New Zealand’s most popular fishing. Only a 25-minute drive from Huka Lodge, the Tongariro River is a considerable attraction to keen fishermen the world over.

Anglers come to the Tongariro to fish for spawning trout which run up the river from the lake over the colder winter months, both Rainbow and Brown trout frequent these waters and disappointments are rare.

Your fishing guide will pick you up in a four-wheel drive vehicle from the Lodge and return you again. They will provide top quality rods, reels, waders and flys. Charges begin from when your guide arrives and end upon your return to Huka Lodge. All prices are based on a maximum of two anglers per guide.

Fly fishing casting lessons

Our experienced fly fishing instructor will meet you on the Huka Lodge lawn at a time convenient to you. This knowledge and these techniques will equip you well for future fishing experiences. No wading required.


Half-day tuition & fishing

This can be either a 6-hour morning or afternoon activity. Your guide will collect you in a 4x4 vehicle from Huka Lodge and this experience provides tuition, fishing and a picnic lunch. Includes transfers, fishing licences, waders and fishing gear. 


Half-day fly fishing

A 4-hour fishing safari, inclusive of equipment, transport and fishing licences. Morning or afternoon departure times are available.

Full-day river fly fishing

A full-day of guided fly fishing (8 hours including travelling). Inclusive of transport, picnic lunches, fishing licences and all fishing equipment.


Full-day raft fly fishing

The abundance of wild trout in the mighty Tongariro River is incomparable. The wilderness section of the upper river, with its cold, clear natural pools and runs, provides from the 01 December to 31 May, angling isolation, as well as large numbers of quality fighting fish. Raft-fishing trips can be made to suit every angler’s specific needs. Experienced guides are available to help locate and net your first fat Taupo Rainbow.

Wilderness heli-fishing

Full-day guided fly fishing, helicopter transfers and lunches. This is the ultimate fly fishing experience for the more competent angler. The often trophy-size Rainbow and Brown Trout can be sighted in the crystal-clear streams, challenging the fisherman’s skills with either a dry fly or nymph. ‘Catch and release’ is the practice on these rivers.
