HOME-GROWN LUXURY

Kiwis who can afford the best hotel accommodation can get it right here at home. In an interview in Britain’s Telegraph, hotel designer Jean- Michel Gathy — said to specialise in hotels that are ‘‘off the decadence Richter scale’’ — says New Zealand is one of his favourite places, and declares ‘‘Huka Lodge  is the best hotel in the world.’’

Huka Lodge celebrates 90 years with a season of inspirational and intimate occasions.

Enjoy Italian Opera, Eleanor Catton, Alexander McCall Smith, Dr Libby Weaver, Chaumet and Pasquale Bruni, Nick Farr-Jones, Aston Martin, Champagne Bollinger, a Rodd & Gunn weekend … and so much more.

deborah4Huka Lodge is poised to celebrate, in inimitable style, its 90th anniversary with a stellar line-up of extraordinary talent for a season of inspirational and intimate occasions, during the autumn-winter months of 2014.

Highlights will include intimate dinners with authors Eleanor Catton and Alexander McCall Smith, an Italian Opera Weekend with Sydney’s iconic chef Stefano Manfredi in which Deborah Wai Kapohe will sing, along with emerging talent from the New Zealand Opera School.

A Celebrate the Art of Living weekend will bring together highly acclaimed and respected leaders in their fields. Health and wellbeing expert Dr Libby Weaver, winemaker Kevin Judd, and purveyors of luxury jewellery brands Chaumet and Pasquale Bruni, Hartfield Jewellers, will all show guests how to get the best from life in so many ways. Aston Martin will also be providing their latest sports cars for a test-drive to continue the theme of inspiration and beauty from luxury brands.

EleanorCatton

A Rodd & Gunn Weekend showcases this iconic New Zealand brand and some of its typically favourite activities – driving with Range Rover, trout fishing, men’s fashion and styling, bespoke leather accessories, celebrity guest and speaker Sir Graham Henry, Tasmania’s NANT whisky, exploring Lake Taupo with Sealegs … and more.

An annual institution at Huka Lodge, the Bollinger Champagne Dinner will be hosted by Clive Weston, sharing with Huka Lodge guests part of the small global allocation of an R.D. (récemment dégorgé) release made in 2014, along with other vintages. The menu will be created by culinary genius Martin Benn of Sydney’s celebrated Sepia, named ‘Restaurant of the Year 2014’ by the Sydney Morning Herald’s Good Food Guide.

Join us for yet another splendid version of the Lodge’s popular Big (Aussie) Red Dinner, hosted by great Australian and sporting legend Nick Farr-Jones. A selection of award-winning and rare red wines showcasing Australia’s famed Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz styles will include the Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz and the Vasse Felix Heytesbury Cabernet Sauvignon amongst others.

This year’s extraordinary programme of events at Huka Lodge concludes with an evening spent with Eleanor Catton, the recent recipient of one of the world’s most prestigious literary awards, the Man Booker prize.

Huka Lodge has certainly come a long way since the charming Irishman Alan Pye founded it in 1924. His simple tented camp on the banks of the Waikato River quickly gained a reputation for its generous hospitality and for trophy-size trout. While these still draw people to the property to this day, Huka Lodge has grown to become a much richer and more unique experience – one worthy of inspiring such a spectacular celebration for its 90th year.

Huka Lodge is a sister property to Dolphin Island, Fiji and Grande Provence Estate, South Africa. All three properties comprise The Huka Retreats and are the vision of their founder, entrepreneur Alex van Heeren.

ABOUT THE BACHELOR

On ABC’s hit primetime reality series The Bachelor, one lucky man is offered the chance to find true love. A single and eligible Bachelor embarks on a romantic journey, getting to know a number of beautiful women, gradually narrowing the field as he continues his search for his soul mate. At the end of this romantic voyage, if he has found the one, will there be a proposal — and will she say yes? Hosted by Chris Harrison, The Bachelor is produced by Next Entertainment in association with Warner Horizon Television.

When Juan Pablo Galavis, a former professional soccer player from Venezuela, stepped out of the limo last season to meet Bachelorette Desiree Hartsock, he also stepped into the hearts of female fans across the country, women who were taken with his sincerity, easy-going charm and good looks. The dashing single dad, very devoted to his young daughter, Camila, was ready to find love. Despite failing to win Desiree’s heart, Juan Pablo became one of the most talked-about men of the season; now, he is back with his own chance to find the love of his life and a wife — as well as a stepmother to his daughter — from among 27 beautiful bachelorettes. Follow Juan Pablo’s search for his soul mate in the 18th edition of The Bachelor Mondays (8:00–10:01 p.m., ET) on ABC.

New Zealand's Huka Lodge rated by Smith Hotel Awards as second best in world for 'The Greatest Outdoors'

New Zealand's Huka Lodge rated by Smith Hotel Awards as second best in world for 'The Greatest Outdoors'

Huka Lodge, famed for its location of great natural beauty, within 17-acres of grounds listed as a Garden of National Significance, on the banks of the Waikato River, has just been chosen as second runner up in ‘The Greatest Outdoors’ category of the inaugural Smith Hotel Awards.

47,000 votes were cast and Huka Lodge, along with the other hotels ranked as the Top Ten of ‘The Greatest Outdoors’ category, were selected from over 900 international hotels. Dunton Hot Springs in the United States was the overall winner of the category, while Australia’s Sal Salis was third runner up. Huka Lodge was the only New Zealand property to feature in the Top Ten.

Judging was based on the premise that the hotels all shared extraordinary exterior appeal to the extent that they were naturally blessed with a breath-taking location and picture-postcard views, according to the popular Mr & Mrs Smith.

Huka Lodge lies upstream from the mighty Huka Falls and all guest suites and exclusive cottages overlook the deep turquoise green waters of the Waikato River, as they have since the property was founded in 1924. Should guests ever feel the need to leave this legendary haven of beauty and style the whole central plateau region awaits, with some of the finest trout fishing in the world as well as an amazing range of active adventure experiences available. Huka Lodge has created a superb series of lifestyle packages to showcase the best of these here.

British Chef Paul Froggatt joins Huka Lodge

Chef_Paul_Froggatt_BNew Zealand’s Huka Lodge has announced the appointment of well-known British chef Paul Froggatt, most recently of Hong Kong’s Landmark Mandarin Oriental Two Michelin-Star Amber Restaurant, as its new Executive Chef, commencing in October 2013.

Paul trained in England and France where his career highlights included working at Gidleigh Park Hotel (Two Michelin-Star), Bernard Loiseau en Bourgogne (Three Michelin-Star) and Chateau de Courcelles (One Michelin-Star). Paul followed this by stints at two of Singapore’s popular leading European restaurants San Marco and Saint Pierre.

Paul, bilingual in French and English, accredits this experience for culminating in his desire to relocate his family, including his Singapore-born wife and two small children, to work at New Zealand’s iconic Huka Lodge.

“As a chef, I’ve always had two ambitions for my career. The first was to cook to the highest level of Michelin Stars and I’ve now done this at three of Europe’s great restaurants.”

“The second has been to work at a leading lodge, where I can create the sort of environment where guests feel welcome and at home, almost as if they were in my own kitchen. For this reason, working with Huka Lodge is a dream come true for me.”

Paul’s arrival at Huka Lodge will coincide with some of the region’s best produce coming into season, and this will greatly influence some of the menus he is planning for guests over the coming months.

Current Executive Chef at Huka Lodge, the popular Michel Louws, known to local audiences through his recent involvement as a guest judge on MasterChef New Zealand, has elected to leave after his existing contract expires to fulfill a long-held dream of travelling with his partner Marianne.

Huka Lodge is a sister property to Dolphin Island, Fiji and Grande Provence Estate, South Africa. All three properties comprise The Huka Retreats and are the vision of their founder, entrepreneur Alex van Heeren.

Worlds Apart, The Huka Retreats - a new book celebrating three of the world's most special places

Worlds Apart, The Huka Retreats - a new book celebrating three of the world's most special places

This collection of stunning retreats embraces the beauty of their unique and natural surroundings – Huka Lodge in New Zealand’s Taupo, nestling by the Waikato River, renowned for its generous hospitality and proximity to world-class trout fishing; Dolphin Island off the northern coast of Vitu Levi in Fiji, a tiny jewel of a private island for eight best friends; and the enchanting Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate, that graces the Franschhoek Valley, resplendent in its Huguenot and Cape Dutch architectural heritage.

Now all this, and so much more, has been captured by photographer Geoff Mason, within the rich pages of a new book, WORLDS APART, which takes readers on a pictorial journey reflecting the geography, culture and people of each property, linked by the strong sense of style and place innately associated with The Huka Retreats. Over two years in the making, at last this celebration of the absolute style of The Huka Retreats has been published.

The book has been designed for those who love superb interior design and appreciate heritage and ambience, the beauty of sprawling gardens and dramatic natural landscapes. All highlighted through the work of long-time collaborators of The Huka Retreats’ founder Alex van Heeren – leading New Zealand interior designer Virginia Fisher and landscape designer Suzanne Turley.

When celebrated writer, the late Bryce Courtenay met Alex van Heeren over twenty years ago, the two found they shared much in common, including a passion for adventure and a love of Africa, so not surprisingly it was Bryce who agreed to write the Foreword to WORLDS APART to encapsulate Alex’s vision.

“I have long since given up simply looking for what is different or peculiar to some city or country and now seek not only to be aware of what the eyes see, but also to use all the senses and feel the emotion places or experiences evoke uniquely. Destinations that promise this experience are not to be found easily, especially as so many places begin to resemble one giant shopping mall or another, and the sense of place so prized by travellers seeking an authentic experience is forsaken. I can personally guarantee there are three countries in which you will not be disappointed.”

Sadly, Bryce passed away while the book was being printed; however, his touching words serve as a legacy to The Huka Retreats and what they still stand for. A testament to so many years of sending guests home inspired to instil and recreate The Huka Retreats’ essence in their own personal lives and spaces.

The design and production values of WORLDS APART are excellent, and at 304 sumptuous, jaw-droppingly beautiful pages, represent true value for money. The flexi-bound format with matt laminate cover means the pages sit flat, making it easy to hold and to read, and the book feels relaxed and contemporary, only fitting for these beloved havens of the body and soul.
