Riding

Poronui is nested in a secluded mountain valley between Lake Taupo and the east coast plains of the Pacific Ocean. The 16,000-acre private estate combines pristine wilderness, forestry and innovative farming (with Angus breeding program, deer herd and bee-keeping) and is an ideal playground for country pursuits. The varied terrain is perfect for horse riding for both beginners and the advanced rider.

Poronui Horseback Rides

The trails make their way through native and exotic forests, across gentle streams, through manuka-covered hill sides and open grasslands while offering expansive views of diverse landscapes. On your ride expect to see native flora, hear the song of native birds, see spectacular scenery and gain insight into the pioneering history of the land.

The team of horses are New Zealand station bred. They are chosen for their temperament, steady gait and sure footedness. They are kept fit and well-schooled, ensuring an enjoyable riding experience for all.

Poronui offers horses and trails to suit all levels of expertise from the introductory ride for the beginner to the hill rides for the advanced rider. Numbers per ride are governed by the experience of the riders – two beginners, three intermediate and four experienced riders.

Our professional guide comes with extensive experience in the schooling of young horses, competing and instructing. She knows the property intimately, is passionate about the outdoors and has in-depth knowledge of New Zealand flora, fauna and local history.

We offer a choice of English or Australian stock saddles, helmets, gloves, boots and knee chaps are also all provided.
