ZoliZoli Szalardi

After completing his apprenticeship in the family business, and further honing his skills in Germany, Zoli Szalardi found his way to the shores of New Zealand, opening his own bespoke leather business in Auckland 1971. Today Zoli and his family continue to handcraft Rodd & Gunn luggage as they have done for over 20 years using only the finest leather tanned in Italy. Zoli carefully selects each hide before it is either hand or press cut, the hides are then individually machine sewn in the traditional way, by hand. Each result unique and distinctive within each piece of handmade leather luggage that only gets better with age.

Join Zoli for a demonstration on Saturday afternoon, 17 May, of leather accessory making with fine Italian leather, and hear more of his journey incorporating the finer details stitch by stitch.

rangerover2Range Rover

The first Land Rover made its debut in 1948. It was designed with brilliant simplicity for extraordinary ability and unrivalled strength and durability. In fact, six decades on it is estimated that two-thirds of all these incredible vehicles are still at work – many of them in some of the most extreme conditions and inhospitable places on earth.

This culture of innovation has developed ever since with both Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles: new models, more refinement, more innovative technology, more efficiency and fewer emissions. The new small Range Rover is a testament to the vision that takes the company forward and keeps it at the cutting edge of technology and engineering.

Experience all of this firsthand during the Rodd & Gunn Weekend where two of the latest Range Rover Sports vehicles will be available to transfer you to and from activities.

Trout2Fishing on Lake Taupo

At 616-square kilometres, Lake Taupo is the land mass equivalent of Singapore. The lake’s attractive pumice sand beaches give it the appearance of an inland ocean and it offers excellent all year round scenic and fishing experiences.

Rodd & Gunn Weekend guests will enjoy a private launch excursion on Lake Taupo with Chris Jolly Outdoors on Saturday morning, 17 May. Most trout fishing on the lake takes the form of trolling using either lures or flies, with the catch averaging around four pounds.

Paul_FroggattHuka Lodge Executive Chef, Paul Froggatt

British-born chef Paul Froggatt initially trained in the UK and in France where his career highlights included working at Gidleigh Park Hotel (Two Michelin-Star), Bernard Loiseau en Bourgogne (Three Michelin-Star) and Château de Courcelles (One Michelin-Star). Paul followed this by stints at two of Singapore’s popular leading European restaurants San Marco and Saint Pierre.

Paul, bilingual in French and English, accredits this experience for culminating in his desire to relocate his family, including his Singapore-born wife and two small children, to work at New Zealand’s iconic Huka Lodge.

“As a chef, I’ve always had two ambitions for my career. The first was to cook to the highest level of Michelin Stars and I’ve now done this at three of Europe’s great restaurants.”

“The second has been to work at a leading lodge, where I can create the sort of environment where guests feel welcome and at home, almost as if they were in my own kitchen. For this reason, working with Huka Lodge is a dream come true for me.”

Paul and his team will create superb cuisine for guests at the Rodd & Gunn Weekend and he will present a cooking demonstration on Saturday, 17 May followed by a lunch featuring one of the dishes he has just demonstrated.

Nant_whiskyNant Whisky

The journey began in 2004, when the historic Nant Estate (circa 1821) was purchased and meticulously restored to its former glory.

Located at Nant Estate, just outside Bothwell, in the Central Highlands of Tasmania, the Nant Distilling Company proudly produces Australia’s only Highland Single Malt Whisky.

In 2012, just four years after beginning commercial production, Nant Whisky was catapulted to global renown when Jim Murray, the world’s foremost whisky commentator, scored the Nant Single Malt Tasmanian Whisky (American Oak Bourbon Wood) 95.5 out of 100.

Nant Distilling Company founder, Keith Batt, has especially travelled from Tasmania to proudly introduce guests at the Rodd & Gunn Weekend at Huka Lodge to this truly unique and wonderful whisky. Keith will conduct a tutored whisky tasting in the early evening on Saturday, 17 May.

sealegs2The Sealegs experience

SEALEGS® is a revolutionary patented concept in the power boat market. It has been specifically designed and developed to take all the hassle out of the boat launching and retrieval process.

The Sealegs system consists of motorised, retractable and steerable wheels which are fitted to specially designed boats to give users a fully integrated, turn-key package.

A Sealegs boat can be driven from a storage location, down a boat ramp or beach and into the water - all with the occupants staying in the boat and remaining completely dry!

Guests at the Rodd & Gunn Weekend will have the opportunity of a test-drive with the Sealegs team on Lake Taupo after breakfast on Sunday, 18 May.
