Lifting off by helicopter from the grounds of Huka Lodge you will enjoy panoramic views over the northern shores of Lake Taupo, towards the majestic volcanic mountains of the UNESCO World Heritage Tongariro National Park, and identify the southern most point of the famous ‘Pathway of Fire’.

Flying northward, via the mighty Huka Falls, your route will follow the geothermal valley of Wai-O-Tapu; New Zealand’s most colourful volcanic area – renowned for its Artist’s Pallete and Champagne Pools, as well as the Waimangu Thermal Valley.

We will then fly you over the sacred Mt. Tarawera summit, revealing the full magnitude of the spectacular 1886 eruption. En route you will also view the picturesque Tarawera Falls before landing in Whakatane.

Here, you will meet and be briefed by the team from Frontier Helicopters, the White Island tour specialists. They will provide you with safety equipment prior to flying you on the next leg of your guided tour of the living, breathing geological giant –Whakaari (White Island).

Your return journey from Whakatane to Huka Lodge takes you via the colourful Blue Lake, and also takes in the wonders of the Orakei Korako and Te Kopia thermal regions.

Ultimate Huka Experience flight

This 1 hour 20 minute flight takes you south of Taupo into the magnificent Kaimanawa Range wilderness, with the possible sighting of wild horses, red and sika deer. Land next to the world-famous Rangitikei River to view the huge trophy-size Rainbow Trout. Return to the lake edge via the three volcanoes of the Tongariro World Heritage Park – Mts. Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro. These are significant for their cultural history and rare flora and fauna, with views of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and stunning Emerald Lakes.

Hawke’s Bay wine trail by helicopter

Travel over some spectacular scenery on the journey to and from Hawke’s Bay. Take the opportunity to taste the region’s famous wines and learn a little about the history of viticulture in New Zealand. Lunch can be arranged at one of the areas fine vineyard restaurants – Craggy Range or Mission Estate being our recommendation. Returning to Taupo via the Kaimanawa Forest Park and Mohaka River is a truly stunning scenic flight.

Wairakei Terraces

Heritage trail

A 30-minute scenic flight starting from the Huka Lodge grounds and heading downstream to the famous Huka Falls and Wairakei Geothermal Power Station area. At the time it was built, only the second geothermal power plant in the world to begin commercial operation.

Proceeding to Mt. Tauhara – a dormant strato-volcano formed about 65,000 years ago, then on to the Maori rock carvings and the northern shores of Lake Taupo.

View the Wairakei Terraces from the air, with cascading silica terraces in blues, pinks and whites, fed by the steaming multi-hued waters of the Alum Lakes.

Tongariro World Heritage flight

This 60-minute scenic flight leaves from the Huka Lodge grounds, flies south over the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and the thermal activity of the newly-formed Te Maari Crater. Your flight path then continues on, over the Blue Lake and Emerald Lakes, to the summit of Mt. Ngauruhoe, famously known as Mt. Doom from The Lord of the Rings trilogy. From here, your helicopter takes you to the snow-capped summit of Mt. Ruapehu, the highest mountain in the North Island of New Zealand. Enjoy aerial views of the North Island’s only ski fields and the wild beauty to be seen in the landscape of the central plateau. Return to the Lodge via Lake Taupo and the spectacular Huka Falls.

Waitomo Caves

This 45-minute flight from Huka Lodge takes you around the northern shores of Lake Taupo to the Waitomo Caves and returns via the Waikato River hydro-electric dam system, Wairakei Geothermal Bore Field and Huka Falls.

World in a Day; Nature's pathway of fire meets wine culture 

Fly north via the famous Huka Falls, following the Waikato River to the Wai-O-Tapu & Waimangu geothermal regions, fly over and around the rim of the dormant and spectacular volcano Mt. Tarawera, site of the largest eruption in recent history. Travel on to Whakatane where you will land and be briefed by the team from Frontier Helicopters, the White Island tour specialists. They will provide you with safety equipment prior to flying you on the next leg of your guided tour of the living, breathing geological giant –Whakaari (White Island).

On your return from White Island travel to the famous Hawke’s Bay region, land at two wineries, take the opportunity to taste superior New Zealand wines and learn a little about the history of the local viticulture industry. Lunch can be booked at either one of these famous vineyard restaurants or we can take a picnic and land on a remote beach.

Fly west via the beautiful Kaimanawa Forest Park & Mohaka River, search for the famous Kaimanawa wild horses and you may even spot wild deer. Land next to the world famous Rangitikei River and enjoy the wilderness. Return to the Lodge via the volcanic activity areas and craters of the spectacular World Heritage Tongariro National Park and the pristine waters of the great Lake Taupo.

Hobbiton movie set tour

Fly north by helicopter over Huka Falls beyond to the plains of the Central Plateau, arriving at ‘Hobbiton’. Take a tour of the movie set used for Sir Peter Jackson’s well known movies based on the novels by J.R.R. Tolkien. Learn how this beautiful part of a 1,250-acre sheep farm was transformed into an extraordinary movie set. Private 2 hour tour included. 3 hours in total.

Central North Island – stars of nature and the silver screen

Departing Huka Lodge we fly south over the pristine Great Lake Taupo and its White Cliffs. Climb to view the summit craters of Mt. Tongariro, Mt. Ngauruhoe and Mt. Ruapehu, enjoy spectacular views of the Tongariro Crossing, Emerald Lakes and thermal activity of the newly formed Te Maari Crater. These volcanoes are the stars of the UNESCO World Heritage Tongariro National Park and home to many film locations from The Lord of the Rings trilogy including; Mt. Doom and Mordor. Land at high altitude in the Kaimanawa Forest Park where, looking back from this vantage point on a clear day – you will be mesmerised by the panoramic views of the great Lake Taupo and the Central Plateau.

Continue west over the Waikato Plains to your first landing place and tour destination – Hobbiton! Explore this location used for the Peter Jackson movies, The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit. View Hobbit holes, Green Dragon Inn, Mill and other structures created for these films. Learn how this beautiful part of a 1,250 acre sheep farm was transformed into an extraordinary movie set. This private tour takes 2 hours.

Heli-Tarawera hiking & sailing experience

Meet your private guide for the day, board your helicopter and fly over the Volcanic Plateau, including the Blue and Green Lakes, before landing on the slopes of the majestic Mt. Tarawera. Enjoy expansive views of the craters formed during the spectacular 1886 eruption and the 7km long volcanic rift that runs the length of the mountain. Continue your flight over picturesque Lake Tarawera before landing at the start of your next adventure.

Enjoy following an inland walking track, alongside the pristine waters of the Tarawera River. Hike for approx. 2 hours through volcanic landscapes and native bush, traversing over underground streams and panoramic vistas. You will arrive at your destination, the beautiful Tarawera Falls, where a delicious picnic lunch awaits your arrival.

After lunch we walk for a further 15 minutes to our private vehicle for a 45-minute road journey to the shores of Lake Rotoiti. Here, you will join our 53ft. luxury catamaran for an afternoon of sailing, swimming and soaking in the therapeutic waters of a hot pool. Disembark in the early evening and re-join your private vehicle for the one hour drive back to Huka Lodge at the conclusion of an amazing day of adventure.

Exclusive Rotorua adventure day

An epic day out in nearby Rotorua this exclusive itinerary will see you undertake some highlights of New Zealand’s best adventure activities.

We start the day with your personal guide picking you up from Huka Lodge for your transfer, by private vehicle, to Rotorua.

We start the days’ adventures with mountain bike riding – strap on the latest Bell helmets and set off on full suspension Giant mountain bikes exploring the famous trails in Whakarewarewa Forest. We spend the next 1 ½ hours on a selection of the 150km purpose-designed mountain bike trails that comprise this unique adventure playground. With trails suitable for riders at every level everyone’s needs can be met.

We now set off by road to Okawa Bay for an exciting adrenaline-filled 45-minute rafting trip down the Kaituna River, home of the world’s highest commercially rated waterfall, Tutea. At 7 metres tall this is white water adventure at its very best.

This adventure is only available for children 13 years or older, accompanied by an adult.

Next, we rejoin our vehicle for a short journey to Lake Rotoiti, where we embark on a private charter on your 53ft. luxury catamaran.

Having worked up an appetite, enjoy a gourmet barbecue lunch, while sailing on the clean, clear waters of the lake. Soak in the therapeutic thermal waters of hot pools only accessible by boat on the shores of the lake before setting off in the early evening, for the journey by road back to the Lodge.

For lunch, enjoy fine food and a scenic setting at a beautiful lake near Rotorua. Rotorua is situated one-hour by car, from Taupo.

Napier/Hastings Tour

Take a trip to the ‘Napa Valley’ of New Zealand on the east coast of the North Island. A full-day is needed to visit this rich and fertile land where you can taste some of their award-winning wines, lunch at a vineyard or visit the city of Napier, which has become the Art Deco capital of the world, due to the redevelopment in 1931 following an earthquake.

You can walk or travel by vehicle to see the gannets at Cape Kidnappers or visit artists and antique shops.
